Did you know that dogs don’t sweat the same way we humans do? Dogs only have a few tiny sweat glands in their paws that help regulate body temperature, and where we sweat – dogs pant. The best way to avoid heat-related problems is prevention. So prevent heat strokes and other nasty issues with a few basic tips and tricks:
💦 Water is our best friend in the summer
Remember to give your dog water regularly. Always keep drinking water available and bring water for your dog in a bottle when out and about.
🐕 Exercise and walking your dog
If possible, try to walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperatures are lower. It’s a good idea to carry water with you during walks too. If it still seems too hot outside, take it easy and rest in the shade.
❗ Get the basics right
Certain surfaces, like asphalt, can get extremely hot during a heatwave. Check with your hand if the surface feels too hot and protect your dog’s paws if needed or avoid these areas. And please, never leave your dog alone in a hot car during summer! 😫
😎 Shade, shade, shade!
If you’re hanging out with your dog in the yard or park or heading to a picnic or the beach together, pick a spot where your dog can find some shade.
✂️ Could a trim be in order?
If your dog has a thick coat, a summer haircut can do wonders in the heat.
🧊 Cooling down
Play with water. Just remember to always check the algae situation before letting your dog swim in a lake or the sea! 🦠 For example, you can check the situation at https://www.jarviwiki.fi/
Freeze Alvar Pet's Chicken Topper into ice cubes to cool down hot days 👉🏼 take inspiration from Kaapo 🤤 You can also put an enrichment toy in the freezer filled with the Chicken Topper.
Once you’ve got these basics covered, you’re already well on your way. 💚 And remember, you know your dog best, so keep an eye on them and watch for anything unusual in their condition during the heat 🥵☀️
